The Senior Boom is officially upon us! In 1776, the average life expectancy was 35 years of age. In 1880, it was 45, and today it is 75-plus years of age and growing. In fact, projections are that by 2020 there will be more than 7 million seniors in the United States over the age of 85! And, as of the 2007 Census, there were more than 272,000 seniors over the age of 65 in Kentucky alone.

Payment Plan for Nursing Homes Raises Concerns

California is embarking on a campaign to improve the way patients are treated in nursing homes. The state is developing a plan to link $40 million in Medi-Cal rate increases to standards of care in nursing homes. Higher Medi-Cal payments, scheduled to start next summer, would be awarded to nursing homes receiving top marks in several categories, such as nurse-to-patient ratios, minimizing physical restraints and preventing bedsores.
